B-boys and The PUMA Suede

MARCH 2013 –Since the explosion of hip hop culture in the late 1970s, there has never been a movement as fervent and still very popular as B-boyism. From its heydays in South Bronx in New York, like wild fire it quickly caught on throughout the States and Europe, and in the 1980s Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong B-boys have mastered break dancing and battles on the streets. It wasn’t just the B-boy craze that travelled across continents but also the love for the iconic street staple that the purveyors of hip hop and dance like the New York City Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew loved to wear – the PUMA Suede.

If the B-boy movement was a storm, The Suede was right in the center. The moment the sneakers hit the streets, everybody had to have them. Back then, the original human beat box Doug E. Fresh used to say,“Brooklyn loved PUMA. Harlem and the Bronx loved PUMA. PUMA was runnin‘ things.“ The Suede getting top mileage in the movie Beat Street cemented is status as the first shoe of B-boyism.

And so began this neverending love affair between B-boys and The Suede.

This Spring-Summer 2013, marking The Suede’s 45th year of changing the game, PUMA scoured the streets and caught up with the B-boys of today to understand why The Suede has remained a true street icon.
